Johannesburg has long been known as the leader in the realm of mining for gold, hence the nickname, ‘Egoli’ which is translated to ‘City of Gold‘. The gold of this continent is found at very extreme depths under the surface of the earth, some reaching as far down as four thousand miles such as the mines of Western Deep Level.  This is one of the worlds deepest mines.  This has been difficult for the miners due to the fact that the further below the surface of the earth one travels, the hotter it gets.  Air conditioning units are necessary to make working at these depths tolerable and bearable.  While the temperature is kept at thirty two degrees, the humidity is consistently at about one hundred percent.  Gold from this mine in particular, is gathered at the incredible expense of energy, materials and man power.  Even after the tons of dynamite, the electricity, and the various different chemicals used to extract the gold, it is still necessary for it to go through many more stages at the refineries, before it becomes the gold that is most valuable and pure on the markets.

The industry of mining gold has experienced pressure as other countries compete, such as Australia and Russia, and are able to produce more inexpensive alternatives on the world market.  This has affected many businesses in the city, such as tourism and the luxury hotels.  Johannesburg was once an untouched region of South Africa, however that changed rapidly during 1886, when the first miner struck gold.  As wold spread, one of the largest gold rushes in the world took place, and in just three years Johannesburg became the largest city in South Africa.  Many of the black members of society were forced to spend one year tours working in the mines, separated from their homes and their families.  As with so much regarding the history of this country, what came as a result was art.  The men danced to raise their spirits, and the dances of the miners still occur and are celebrated throughout the city to this day.

The lack of opportunity for education, and the segregation during the times of apartheid was evidence around the country of South Africa, from the market place to the hotels, Johannesburg and her people needed a voice.  And fighting against the barriers of these times the black artists of the city stood up to gain their rights as the teachers, the gallery owners, the curators and the artists they were and still are.  What started the change was a community art center established in 1952, that offered classes to the adults of the city, the Polly Street Art Center.  Before this time there was no educational offerings to the black artists, no chance for them to develop the techniques and the skills that were available at the time to their white counterparts.  This school was in operation for only fourteen years, but that was enough time to create the passion and the drive and the inspiration that has carried through the artists of today.

The country began re-habbing buildings to be used to house the collections of this artwork in 1872, the first one being Cape Town’s South African National Gallery.  Just about thirty years later, the then director, Hugh Lane, of Ireland’s National Gallery, assembled a collection that was given to South African city, Johannesburg.  The Johannesburg Art Gallery opened in 1915 and was the first building in the history of the country that was built with the express purpose of housing this art collection.  Many other cities have sense followed suit, as more and more people are becoming aware of the significance of the art created by the South African people.  Many of these galleries had an extensive collection of European art, however administrators felt that more of the space should be dedicated to the art that is indigenous and representative of their own country.  Whether one is traveling through Cape Town, Pretoria, or Johannesburg, there are many galleries and museums to spend the day in, to gain a bit of historical knowledge and inspiration from the people who have so long found it necessary to fight just to simply express.

The country of South Africa is bound together with arts, interwoven into the culture and the history.  Most of the parks and gardens are filled with sculpture, and any restaurant or Cape Town luxury hotel is certain to have pieces of work decorating the walls and the rooms, that are significant to this rich history.  On any trip one takes to South Africa, one must find the galleries and museums and stroll through them, not only for the visual entertainment, but for the knowledge that is gained and leads to better understandings of the country and the people of the regions.  One such gallery in Cape Town is the South African National Gallery. There are permanent collections here that are rotated to accommodate the touring shows and exhibits. At any given time one will be able to walk through the halls that are filled with everything from sculpture, to photography, textiles and jewelery, paintings and prints on paper.

The museum does lack, however, a significant amount of traditional work from the pre-colonial time period.  This is due to the high cost of Western art, and the lack of sufficient funding in order to be able to afford to house the work permanently.  There is also not much represented from the 1980′s, as the political situation of Apartheid made it difficult for the gallery to obtain the works of the artists at this time.  The gallery has been attempting to obtain more work from this time.  Beginning in 1990, work has been done to create a collection of work that celebrates the expression of the different cultures living in Africa.  Sculpture and traditional bead-works is part of a collection that is well respected throughout the world.  The women of South Africa create this art form in an expressive and articulate manner.  The gallery joined the city of Ghana in creating the Bead Society of South Africa, as this is such an important element of the culture.  The works in this gallery are stunning and one traveling here should definitely take a few days to experience all that the museum has to offer.

There are many sections to the gardens at Kirstenbosch in South Africa. The sections are separated by the streams that run through the garden, trimmed with red alder trees, ferns, and besembos.  Fig and camphor trees were planted in 1660 by Jan Van Riebeeck, a Dutch settler.  The grounds of the garden support not just the beauty of the natural world, but the science behind it all as well.  The National Botanical Institute has their headquarters here.  This is an association that administers and supports the international network of research and gardens.

One such facility that focuses on natural history is the Cape Herbarium.  All of Cape Town enjoys the benefits of this garden and the scientists, all of the businesses, restaurants and luxury hotels Cape Town offers are surrounded by the indigenous plants and flowers, creating a perfect holiday retreat filled with beauty.

A quarter of a million species are preserved at the herbarium, a collection that was started by scientists and botanists in 1825.  This is a combined effort with the South Africa Museum.  All the paths that wind throughout the garden are paved, and create easy access to those walking, or in wheelchairs, through the trees that are indigenous through Skeleton Gorge, all the way to Table Mountain’s summit.  There are paths that cut through Forest Walk, wherein one can enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the the Yellow-wood trees, the Alders and the Ironwoods.

The two paths that have been specifically designed for wheel chair accessibility are the Silver Tree Stroll and Weaverbird Walk.  These provide those with wheels instead of legs, the opportunity to experience the outdoors and nature.  There is also a pass that is designed for the blind as well.  Aptly titled, the Braille Trail, the plants are labeled throughout, with signs written in…braille.  And along this path, there is a specifically designed fragrant garden, in which each of the specimens is labeled with large print and in braille.

Looking for the perfect hideaway in Bombay, India?  Hotels here are designed with escape in mind.  Vacationing in one of the most exciting cities in the world can be invigorating, and the perfect hotel can elevate the experience from pleasurable to absolutely heavenly.  The accommodations here are stocked with first-class amenities, staffs trained to cater to your every need, and a wonderful feeling of hospitality.  As your nights will be rejuvenating, your days will be adventures into a cultural wonderland.

There is so much to see and do in Bombay, that it’s impossible to even begin in one day.  There are markets and restaurants and tours and museums, not to mention some of the oldest continually-running spiritual centers in the world.  There is also a massive art scene that is delightful, intriguing, and fascinating.  Sharmila Samant is one of the most exciting emerging artists in the area.  Born in Mumbai in 1967, she was educated at the Sir J.J. School of Fine Arts, where she earned her B.F.A.  Since then, she has had work shown everywhere, from the Tate Modern to the Jakarta Video Festival, in many countries all over the world.  She is also one of the founders of the Mumbai-based art group the Open Circle.

Her works are extremely vivid and complex interruptions in the mainstream of social niceties.  Using a variety of media, like sculpture and video installation, she uses her unique and complicated vision to make important questions about the structures of things as they seem to be.  In one installation, Samant’s Passing she used Foucault’s idea of the Panopticon to illustrate the effects of the culture at large on the formation of feminine identity.  The work is visceral and multi-layered, and speaks to ideas of otherness, putting the viewer in the role of asking questions about their participation in these systems.  This is one example from a large and incredible body of work, one that will be fascinating to watch in the coming decades.

Surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, Oahu spans 112 miles and is one of the most paradisical of the Hawaiian islands. With balmy weather year round, there are many beaches to choose from, all with their offer of activities that will fill your day with relaxation or adventure. The average water temperature is from 75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, making this the perfect island to visit when in Hawaii. Choose to lay on the beach, relaxing with a cool drink in hand or spend your time snorkeling, surfing, or kayaking. The North Shore beaches are best for surfing as the waves can grow to powerful heights and strength. Waikiki Beach has a great surf school and is the most popular for people watching. Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is ideal for snorkeling among Hawaii’s tropical fish, and Ala Moana Beach Park is great for families with kids as there is plenty of shade, grassy expanses, picnic tables, and public amenities. Lanikai Beach is a beautiful beach that invites all types of beach activities. From here you can kayak out to the Mukulua Islands where you can have a picnic lunch before returning. If its a romantic beach you’re looking for, your Hawaii vacation can’t get better than Kailua Beach where the long shoreline makes for a sweet stroll as the tide rolls in and out.

There are no comparisons to the thrilling city than that of New York. A dynamic, inimitable mix of world cultures, skyscrapers towering over each other and colorful neighborhoods. Visitors from around the world arrive by the thousands every single day. One does need to consider if a medical issue comes up what and where to get the best care. New York is known throughout the world for it’s superb Medical Facilities, in which is the reason hundreds of those thousands visiting New York come to get the best treatments offered by the best doctors. Expensive, yes, but that doesn’t stop people who can or can not afford it from flying in and stay at a New York USA Hotel.

One of the best University Hospitals is located in the heart of New York City, NYU Langone Medical Center. One of the Nation’s premier centers for excellent Health Care, biomedical research and medical education. This Medical Facility has over 50 centers, 30 academic departments and approximately 380,00 square feet of research laboratories. A few discoveries have led to Nobel prizes. NYULangone boast it has the best interdisciplinary clinical research that addresses 21st century biomedical science. Another well known Medical Facility is Mount Sinai school of Medicine. With over 300 programs, departments and clinics, Mount Sinai offers a wealth of clinical services. It is the first to describe numerous disorders such asTay-Sachs Disease, Churg -Strauss Disease and Collagen disease. So, if you have some ‘mysterious’ condition that your regular doctors just dismiss as being in your mind and don’t even offer any help or solutions. Don’t get discouraged, Mount Sinai has the doctors, the facilities and the means to help figure out what you have and cure it or at least begin to find a cure. Mount Sinai is also the first in Geriatrics and Adult Development and the first in blood transfusions with compatibility tests to point out that blood groups are hereditary.

I’ve only mentioned two of the top-notch medical facilities that New York has to offer the entire world population. When one talks about the brain drain of doctors at all the other great major cities of the world, they are also taking note that those doctors end up in New York. It is because of the well funded research facilities that cause the brain drain. Yes, these other countries do suffer from the lack of qualified doctors and miss out on the knowledge the research departments develop and discover in New York’s medical facilities. There are cheaper medical facilities around the world, but non so qualified to take the best care of the ones you love as the ones in New York.

Smaller art venues are the hidden treasures of Barcelona. When you find one, you almost want to keep it a secret because you feel it’s your own personal pleasure. Many can be found not far from Top Barcelona Hotels or nestled in the nearby suburbs. Most people, when in Barcelona visit the Picasso Museum or the Museum of Contemporary Art and miss out on the local artistic talent. Miss out on a chance to actually meet and talk with the artist. Even visiting the local coffee shops in and around Barcelona can be considered an art venue in that they display original art from local talent.

Of course, one must visit the major museums, after all, isn’t that what Barcelona’s all about? But, at least put aside one day to search for those smaller venues. Ask the people sitting in the coffee shops if they know of an off-the-beat art gallery or venue. Ask the wait staff at the local restaurants if they have a favorite art place to take their dates. Or just explore on your own. No guided tour; be as creative as an artist, and who knows, maybe you’ll discover a piece of art that inspires you soul and touches you deeply.

When you do find an art venue which you adore purchase a piece. Even though, as I mentioned earlier, you want to keep it your special discovery, blog about it! We need to support all local art, support all local artists. This will help keep art new and fresh. Always moving, always exploring and always keeping the peace. Just like music transcends conflict, art does too. With the economy in the slump, we still need to patron and support art. Art is usually the first thing to be cut in the budgets of schools and in government grants. Barcelona’s government does a wonderful job in supporting it’s artist community, but we need to step up and do the same.

The city of Goa is set apart of the rest of the country of India, sitting in stark contrast as a result of the rich history and cultural heritage.  Goa is the city of  India that is the most unique.  One notices upon visiting with the people on the streets and in the best hotels, Goa is diverse, all the diversity is held important.  No religions are more important than the others.  Everyone is accepted for who they are, regardless of their belief systems.  Traditions are followed and respected in Goa, and they still remain to be the city known to be ahead of the trends of the times.  And just as with all those comfortable with who they are, and who they are not, the culture is very relaxed and easy going.  No fights are inspired by religious discussions or the color of someones bandanna .  All lifestyles are accepted and encouraged and supported.  This is not true for most of the rest of the country, where conservatism and tradition is just part of life.

Music is the essence of the culture in Goa.   Music is a dominant aspect of life for everyone living in the city.  While Indian music is listened to, many find Western music most enjoyable in all forms, from techno to trance, to Blues and Jazz and Country.  Just about every citizen plays a variety of instruments.  Musicality seems to run through their veins.  It is not uncommon to witness someone just break into a song on hot day, for no particular reason what so ever.  Much of the music here is from Portugal, which is due to the rule by the Portuguese at one time.  The cultures have taken on a bit of each other’s cultural and musical heritage.

This cultural diversity and heritage gives Goa so much to offer to the rest of the world.  One may notice while walking through the city a broken-down shack sitting aside a luxury hotel, and notice that the owners of the two buildings are outside having conversation and sipping a drink.  Both lend charm and are a necessary component to what makes the city so incredible as a whole.  There are less restrictions put on women in Goa, they are very confident women who have, and who are “allowed” to have, their own independence.  This is one harmonious and delicious city.

Chennai, the state formerly known as Madras, India has an expansive economic base. It’s been established as the center for electronics manufacturing and software services for many years. More recently, healthcare and the financial services are making a huge contribution to the GNP.

However, it is the healthcare industry that was the topic of discussion recently at a Tourism Conference. Chennai is the base of the Apollo Hospitals group, one of the largest healthcare providers in the world. The hospitals are privately owned and are widely known for having the finest health care services in India, and perhaps in Southeast Asia. Nowadays, Chennai has been solidifying its position as the health capital and as such is attracting medical tourists from all over the world. Health Care Tourism, a term created by the travel industry, describes the growing practice of seeking healthcare in other countries.  Of particular importance to patients is the cost of the healthcare and the expertise in specialized fields. Because of the variations in the officially recognized qualifications vary, it is critical that a patient does due diligence prior to scheduling any surgeries.  Some of the more common surgeries performed are Gastric Banding, Hip Resurfacing Surgery, Shoulder joint replacement as well as many types of cosmetic surgeries.

India’s tourism department has held conferences recently to discuss a new strategy for converting the visiting patients and their families to visitors and tourists of the country. One way of doing this is for hospitals and the medical community to join forces with the tourism department to court the patient at every opportunity.  As a means of positioning the health care providers as giving the best value in services, great strides are being made to be competitive with costs.  In addition, medical staff, doctors, nurses and medical assistants are being trained to meet very strict and challenging standards.  The medical job community must be persuasive when discussing the medical options for a hospital stay and need also discuss possibilities for recuperating in the country. There are many luxury hotels  Chennai that are working in tandem with the tourism department to encourage this endeavor.

Just a few days ago a new policy took affect in many of the public housing, the apartment buildings and the New York business hotels..Rottweilers, Doberman Pincers , and pure bred Pit-Bulls, as well as Pit-Mixes are banned from the buildings.  The reasoning is that these dogs reach a full grown weight of more than twenty-five pounds.  Those who are already living in the buildings will be able to keep their pets, as long as they have the current city registration permits.  However, new tenants, and new dogs are not allowed.  Although not much has been mentioned in the media of the two breeds, the Rottweilers and Dobermans, and any attacks on humans, the Pit Bull has certainly had the lime light.  One tenant went so far to ensure other residents that when she had her dog neutered, she also had most of his teeth removed, even though he had never shown signs of aggression.   ?   The woman owns a miniature Doberman, that weighs in at about 7 pounds.  She stated that she thought the ban was a good move forward as Pit Bulls tend to look at other dogs as though they ‘want to eat them’.   ?   Obviously passions in the city of Manhattan have been stirred.

Dog lovers in the city are stating that this is a kind of profiling maneuver, that punishes the dogs, and the owners of good dogs, for those that are mistreated or used for fighting purposes.  Many other dogs outweigh these breeds, Golden Retriever can reach upwards of 150 pounds, however they are not banned.  As an owner of a Pit-Mix, this writer can only state that this dog is not harmful, nor is the owner a ‘gangster’.  Just someone that walked into a rescue shelter and had her heart melted by a sad puppy.  However, the gang lifestyle and culture surrounds the projects and the public housing developments, and it is something to be considered.  This writer and her dog have been attacked three times, by pure bred Pit-Bulls with irresponsible owners.  And while most proclaim that it is the owner and the way in which the dog was raised, there are just too many youngsters or promoters of the aggressive aspects of the dogs for them to exist in an environment that proves safe for those living in the surrounding apartments and vicinities.

Thousands still cross into the United States every day illegally, but as border security enforcement make it more difficult to use roads, locals say there is more death and more trash in the wilderness.

On a southern Arizona ridge dotted with tall saguaros, not far from one of the world’s most famous spa resorts, volunteers from humanitarian groups hiked into the desert in order to get to the trash pile.  It’s actually a camping ground where immigrants spend their last night in the desert before attempting to enter the USA.  The trash pile is part clothing, part trash left by illegal immigrants who are shedding every possible item in an effort to lighten the load.

Churches and other human advocates met to discuss the realities of living in the USA, along a border that establishes the international boundary. Hundreds of people participated in a discussion about how to handle the treatment of immigrants. Many don’t share the belief in the biblical parable about the Good Samaritan, however others insist that it is the moral imperative. A significant number of advocacy groups believe that treating immigrants with dignity is fundamental to being human.  The Samaritans’ objective is to save lives and ease suffering.  It also stresses that educating others about the plight of migrants is essential if it is ever expected that border policy will become humanized.

Groups make frequent forays into the desert looking for migrants in distress, offering them food, water, medical help and an opportunity to voluntarily surrender to the Border Patrol to get a ride to a port of entry with Mexico. They are often accused of walking a fine line between abetting illegal crossing and just plain helping someone in need.  People are dying in the desert and humanitarian groups will not be passive. It is out of love that the volunteers serve and believe that there’s a “spirit” at work with them .

Many of the festivals of Goa are feasts, of the literal sense, but also in the visual sense.  Some are in honor of saints and gods, and some are in honor of traditional legends.  Goa’s patron saint is Francis Xavier.  The festival in his name, commemorates his life and honors his death.  St. Francis was a Christian missionary who traveled throughout India, predominantly in Agra.  He found success in Agra and was making the journey to China, however passed away just ten miles off the shore.

Perhaps the most important festival honors the beloved Hindu elephant god, Ganesh Chaturthi.  The festival occurs every year on the day of his birth.  This festival occurs across the entire country of India, and is a fervent and joyous occasion and is celebrated in true Goa luxury, fit for a deity so referred.  The religious ceremonies take part over the course of a few days, but the celebrations that occur afterwards often last for close to two weeks.  This is a colorful occasion when the people mend past discordance with family members and ask Ganesh for his blessings.

And speaking of color, known throughout India as the most colorful, the Shigmo Festival held every year in Goa is a series of joyous parades and elaborate celebrations.  This festival usually occurs in March.  The culture and the rich traditional heritage covers the entire city.  It is a bit like a traveling festival through the city, with various activities taking place in different areas.  The costumes are elaborate and to add to the color, at a given time, participants partake in the the ritual of smearing each other with red clay powder, or Gulal.  The final day, there is a grand parade.  Floats that have been designed ahead of time, stream down the street, depicting different stories and myths from the Hindu culture.

The carnival in Goa is equally elaborate, and equally synonymous with the city itself.  Although the carnival has roots based in religion, it has transcended those confines.  This is much like the Mardi Gras in New Orleans, as it precedes the period of Lent.  The carnival lasts for 3 days, however the preparation starts three months prior.  A grand parade begins the festival, and is not just a parade but a spectacle of performing arts and colorful costumes.  Live bands play on the sidelines, and the people dance in the street.  During this time, international visitors attend hoping to gain some of the spirit of Goa, and perhaps bring that back home with them.  This particular festival, is celebrated only in Goa.  No other city in India takes part.  To attend these festivals one must be willing to take part.  And with the gaiety and fun and the color of this rich kaleidoscope, it is quite hard to refrain.

The site where the Empire State building now stands was formerly one of the New York hotel suites, the Waldorf Astoria.  Investors purchased it for twenty million dollars.  The total cost for the construction of the Empire State was close to 41 million dollars.  Construction began during the first years of the Great Depression and was finished just over one year later. And while this served to bring the cost of materials down,  the effects of the depression caused the building to sit empty.  At that time, there was trouble for the investors for two reasons.  It was not located in an area of the city wherein many office space where at the time, and it was such a large building with so many available offices, and business was at a stand still as the full weight of the depression had settled in.  And although the lights were turned on by the president of the U.S., Herbert Hoover, in 1931, signifying the official completion and grand opening, it remained empty for close to fifteen years. In 1954 the original investors sold it to an investment firm from Chicago.

It is now known around the world, not only for the innovation necessary to create and to build it, as it was it remained the tallest skyscraper for forty years, but it is the symbol of New York City.  It is the most distinctive in the skyline, and is one of the most visited tourist sites in Manhattan.  And it has also become a monument, a symbol of the strength and tenacity of New Yorkers during the times of the Depression, and on in to today.  Over the years, many foreign delegates and leaders, princes and queens have been welcomed to the United States and to New York.  What began as a competition between two business, in the race to build the tallest building in the world, resulted in two of the most marvelous architectural accomplishments, the Chrysler building, and the beloved Empire State building.  These two buildings have been favorites among the world of designers and architects, and for the many who visit them each year.

Foreign investments have dropped during the last year.  Some of the cities in Thailand that are seriously affected by this are Hua Hin, Pattaya, Phuket, and Krabi.  Projects involving the development and construction of luxury properties such as new resorts, restaurants and five star hotels, Phuket and the other cities have put them on hold.  Most of all this affects the tourism and high end residential development industries.  Phuket alone, had experienced enormous growth in the financial sectors during the last few years, but the global recession has ended that streak.  Most of the investors, new property owners and buyers and tourists and businesses are foreigners.  This has been affecting not only the luxury developments, but local apartment complexes and market places as well.  And many projects that were still in the pre-production phase have been put on hold. Most financial experts believe that the global market will need to improve before the projects can be re-initiated and completed.

Phuket itself, is fortunate, compared to other cities and regions in the area, as most of the income is not derived from mortgage financing, but through the tourism industry, which has declined the least in Phuket.  The government’s hope is that while many are suffering during the global crisis, those who have continued to retain their assets will also continue to invest them wisely in Thailand.  Many of those with power in the past, such as those in Hong Kong, the United States and Europe, have lost that financial power, resulting in an up to fifty percent drop in these country’s investments and future holdings.  Those looking to develop are being advised to wait until the later half of 2010.  What does have those most concerned in Phuket, is not the global recession but their own politically uncertain times.  They believe that until the unrest in the city is resolved, foreign investors will continue to postpone their actions.

In New York’s city of Brooklyn, in the south end of the town, there is an attraction that is steeped in history, and remains a viable attraction for tourists and locals to this day.  The park on Coney Island, the five star New York hotels and resorts in Brighton Beach, were in their grandest form in the early part of the Twentieth century, but popularity waned in the years following World War II.  With many amusement rides still operating and the Coney Island hot-dogs , the beaches and the sunshine, this little section of New York is still quite famous and traveled.  In 1876, the carousel was built.  For three years the beauty was lit with kerosene lanterns, however in 1879, lights provided by Edison’s invention took over.  The various animals and horses remain as they were, and are hand carved out of wood.  In the early years live music accompanied the lights and colors.  The carousel alone, is one of the most visited attractions in New York.

In addition, the famous Cyclone roller-coaster still provides the thrills and the terrifying ride it has since being built in 1927.  It is one of the few that have been famous throughout history that is still standing, and has the reputations the world over as being the most impressive wooden roller-coaster to date.  In addition to the amusement park rides and the famous hot-dogs, the island is home to the Amphitheater and the Asser Levy Park.  There are three miles of beautiful boardwalk that run through the park and along the Atlantic ocean.  One must not miss the Aquarium in Coney Island.  Open for just about sixty years, this is the only aquarium in New York City.  There are tours and educational classes for the children.  And the site has become well known over the years for their care and dedication to the preservation of the Beluga Whales, of which they offer many opportunities to learn about and interact with these incredible mammals.  Family fun is the goal of the island and as it has provided it for almost one hundred years, this treasure in Brooklyn will continue to do so for many more to come.

February 2009 saw double-digit drops for hotels in the Asia/Pacific region.  Occupancy rates dropped 12.1 percent to an average of 59 percent. While tourism has been hurt by the current bank and credit crisis, the numbers indicate the true impact of the decline that started in December.

There are three key performance metrics used to gauge the health of the hotel industry. In addition to occupancy rates, the region saw a 21 percent decline in the average daily rate which dropped to US$114.82. The revenue per available room also fell 30.5 percent in February to US$67.70 according to statistics compiled by STR Global.

Phuket, Thailand saw the greatest decrease, falling 20.3 percent from last February when they were at nearly 100% occupancy. The island paradise has been a haven for tourists from across Asia and other parts of the world. The hospitality industry is in crisis mode. For the last ten years, jazz musicians from all parts of the world have come together in Singapore for the Mosaic Festival.  This ten day festival occurs every March at the Theaters on the Bay at the Esplanade in downtown Singapore.  The complex was built in hopes of bringing a wide range of live music to Singapore, and is set close to other attractions such as the many 5 star Singapore hotels.  With so many options it is quite easy to find a place to stay during the run of the festival.  Famous jazz masters play along side those just breaking into the musical tradition, it’s a meeting of the most creative of minds.  When the Esplanade Center for the Arts opened it was the goal and dream to bring such incredible talent and beauty and freedom to an island so much controlled by its government.  In a world where a ticket is issued for chewing gum or a student is caned and tortured for speaking there mind and capital punishment is dished out like parking tickets in Los Angeles, music is what heals and makes life worth living.  The people involved just wish for an audience to witness and experience and to feel what is good, and not for monetary gain, but spiritual and artistic health.

Singaporeans sat up and took notice to the international music during the invasions of the Fab Five in the sixties.  The British Invasion was not missed on this tiny island.  Since that time, music from the punk rock and R and B genre have gained popularity.  And just as it always does, exposure inspires creation.  Punk and rock and even the American brand of country music, is starting show itself in the influence on the local bands.  And given the government they have to work with it is an amazing achievement, a window into what it is to be really free in the mind and soul, while perhaps not being so free in the physical and governed sense.  To be able to fine expression in the midst of oppression, to have the opportunity to make others sing and dance and play along…to quote an Amnesty International film, Shadowland, “you can take my body but you can’t take my mind” is what the music and the arts offer to people, the artists and to the audience.  From philharmonic symphony to heavy metal, and from opera to alternative, the Esplanade in Singapore is helping the people take there lives and put them in a safe place and a place where it is safe and encouraged to express one’s self in a dynamic way.

From its fabulous beaches to its beautiful architecture the allure of Goa, India is unparalleled.  Though it is the smallest of the states in India and is known by many as a gateway to other parts of the country, Goa has built a reputation as one of Asia’s most popular holiday destinations.  This is due largely to the aforementioned beaches, but also to the wonderful nightclub scene which attracts the young and beautiful to this exotic region.

Goa is much more than trance music and sunbathing.  The state is home to some stunning architecture that blends Indian tradition with the Portuguese influences of the colonial period.  Churches and other buildings from the 450 years of Portuguese rule have been preserved in many of Goa’s cities. There are also forts and other landmarks that celebrate the rich heritage of the area.

The cities and beaches are havens for tourists.  Home to great restaurants, five star hotels Goa, swanky nightclubs and tons of places to shop, they are the center of Goa’s tourist industry.  In addition to modern shopping centers, there are traditional open markets. Restaurants feature incredibly fresh seafood from the waters off Goa and those on the beaches take full advantage of their ocean views.  Visitors will want to be sure to sample the world-famous feni at some point in their trip.

The villages of Goa offer a more traditional India.  From charming mountain enclaves to coastal villages, the real Goa is to be found in these traditional communities. Even with the growth of its cities, most of the population resides in villages, commuting to the city for work. The pace here is even slower and the people even friendlier, though its hard to believe that’s possible until one ventures outside the normal tourist city tours.

Goa offers both historic landmarks and natural beauty.  Some of the more popular attractions in the area include the Church of the Immaculate Conception, the Mangueshi Temple, and the Houses of Goa (an architectural museum). Nature lovers will want to check out the beautiful national parks and the many animal and bird sanctuaries across Goa.

Among the many five star Madrid hotels to choose from when looking for a gourmet dining experience, The Ritz is considered one of the best.  There are two levels to this restaurant, offering up very fine, but different atmospheres.  On the first floor, or terrace, the feeling is much more casual.  A variety of options from the tapas menu or grill are aimed to please and tantalize.  On the second floor there is the Goya Restaurant, no doubt named for the famous painter, this establishment offers up a more sophisticated and elegant night.  Very refined dishes are served, originating from various regions of this country known for culinary delights and experimentation.  As in keeping with the reality based shows of the United States, every so often during the year, the Goya invites chefs to participate in culinary challenges.  This is meant as a regional competition, with the underlying need to compete with the close neighbor that is France.  It seems every restaurant, every chef, and anyone dedicated to the preparation of food has France and its reputation looking over their shoulder.  In any case, what is to be expected is some of the finest flavors of the cuisine of Spain, and something every tourist should experience.

The chef of the Goya is one of only four others to be honored with 4 Michelin Stars, quite and accomplishment considered the region he is from and the competition to be found there.  Along with just a simple and delicious opportunity for a night out, this restaurant has become a popular meeting place and destination for all types of celebrations, weddings being the foremost booked events.  Waiters of the Goya are well trained and versed in the language of viticulture, offering up wine suggestions that compliment any mean prepared here perfectly.  From freshly prepared salads to appetizers, to dishes such at a fillet Mignon grilled to perfection and topped with a bit of tender foie gras, one has to assume that the night is complete.  Not so, as a meal without a dessert is a meal that may have well not begun.  Such delicacies are created from fresh fruits and by the top pastry chefs of the world.  Tiramisu and some cleansing sorbet and perhaps a bit of Amarone, a perfect ending to a perfect dining experience at the Goya at the Ritz.

The first ever Emirates Airline International Festival of Literature (EAIFL) is in full swing in Dubai.  EAIFL kicked off on Thursday at the Festival City with speeches and a parade as well as various cultural displays.  This is the first true literary festival to be held in the Middle East and Dubai is proud to be hosting this premiere event.

Over sixty authors are participating in this inaugural event. They represent genres as diverse as science fiction, children’s literature, contemporary fiction, and inspiration and self-help.  Audiences, including other authors, will be offere more than fifty separate events over the four-day event which wraps up on March 1st.

Several years ago the Ruler of Dubai made literacy in the Arab World a primary vision. The idea for a festival celebrating reading and authorship was born from that vision. The final day of the festival will be specially dedicated to Education and will feature interaction between authors and students from area schools and universities.

EAIFL will feature some exclusive book releases as well as workshops, booksignings, and readings. The associated EAIFL Fringe Festival will feature local artists, poets, and musicians as well as cultural exhibitions and workshops. The events at the Fringe Festival will be free of charge.

Together with the other festivals held throughout the city each year, EAIFL is expected to boost tourism as well as the city’s growing cultural reputation. The many Dubai UAE luxury hotels look to events like this to attract business as do retailers and restaurants throughout the city.

While very little is recorded about the origins of Dubai, the area was the home of ancient trading villages that served as a meeting place for traders from both the West and the East. Much of the history of the Arabian peninsula was transmitted by oral tradition rather than the written word.  It is believed that the area was settled thousands of years ago, even though Dubai doesn’t appear in written records until 1095.

During the installation of sewer lines for Dubai Internet City, the remnants of a 7,000 year old mangrove swamp were uncovered.  Geologists note that 5,000 years ago the coastline retreated inland, leaving the entire area covered in sand.

Early settlers in the area are believed to have worshipped Bajar or Bajir. The region was controlled in ancient times by the Sassanian and Byzantine empires before coming under Islamic rule. The Sassanians were driven out by the Umayyad Caliph. The Dubai Museum has discovered several artifacts from that period.

While much of the ancient relics of  Dubai have been lost in time, visitors to the city will find some evidence of bygone eras throughout the city. In addition to the Dubai Museum and several historic mosques, visitors can visit “Old Dubai” which features historic buildings and ships. The city is also home to many souks or traditional markets that are visceral reminders of earlier times.

Of course, Dubai is a modern city as well as an ancient one.  While the desert vistas, camels, and markets may remind one of the timeless history of the Middle East, the city itself has plenty of 21st century conveniences and technology.  There are business towers, shopping malls, five star Dubai hotels, and countless modern entertainment venues throughout the city.  Dubai is also on the leading edge of manufactured environments. The three largest artificial islands in the world are located just off the city’s coast.

Whether stepping back into ancient Dubai or enjoying the leisure and comfort of modern Dubai, visitors will find any trip to this exciting city to be relaxing and even magical.

Singapore is one of only two cities that exist in the middle of the rain forest.   The people of the island are aware of the interdependence of the state of the environment and the health of the plants, the trees, the flowers and the wildlife.  So it goes to stand that the gardens of Singapore are among the most beautiful on earth.  The gardens are open to the public and most offer classes and lectures.  Once such garden, the Singapore Botanic even has a whole section just for children.  The classes offered instruct children on the various species and emphasize the importance of the health of the ecosystem as it relates to the health of the planet and to the continued existence of life as we know it.  The Botanic garden is in the middle of Singapore, close to other attractions such as the Zoo, various restaurants and some of the best Singapore hotels.  It contains many different species, some of them extremely rare.  There is also quite an orchid garden with more than 1,500 in bloom on any given day.  In amongst the garden flowers is an exquisite restaurant and a stage where one can enjoy gourmet food, incredible landscapes and a symphony all in one night.

The Chinese Garden was built in 1975 and takes into consideration not just the layout of the garden itself, but also the traditional architecture of Ancient China.  Created by the well known architect, Yuen-chen Yu, the garden is one of Singapore’s most spectacular sites.  After crossing the White Rainbow Bridge one enters the courtyard and into the garden itself.  Fish ponds, streams and paths delicately place lend to the peace and tranquility this garden offers to its visitors.  There is a special section of the garden containing just Bonsai trees, over 1,000 in all.  While one is definitely encouraged to just view and enjoy, the classes in caring for the Bonsai tree lend a greater understanding of this ancient, traditional practice.

The Mandai Orchid Garden is a must see for any orchid admirer.  This garden too, is located near many other attractions and is easily assessable.  Standing on the hills, among waterways and native trees, this 50 year old garden has one of the largest collections of orchids, at 20,000 plants in bloom.  The Mandai also has gourmet restaurants, and what better way to enjoy a meal than to be surrounded by blooming orchids.

Each and every year, various festivals and celebrations occur on the island of Mallorca.  These festivals draw travellers and vacationers from all over the world.  There are many reasons for these celebrations and most of them are steeped heavily in tradition and mythology.  There are two festivals that honor animals.   One such festival is in honor of ducks, the other in honor of farm animals and agricultural beasts.

The first festival, known as the Releasing of the Ducks, has created controversy over the years.  Various animal rights activists protested the using of the live ducks during the event, which caused the locals to change their ways.  Nowadays yellow, rubber ducks are used, but the capturing of live ducks that had been let go on the open sea went on for many years.  To capture a duck released during this traditional event was the object of the game.  Due to the fact that this occurred in the populated areas near the businesses, boat yards and 5 star Mallorca hotels, many of the animals were hurt in the process.  Some have a hard time letting go of the tradition.  A few years ago, a disguised group showed up to release live ducks into the sea, which caused quite a stir and an emotional out cry. Although this is a traditional event and a widely popular festival often drawing an audience of 2000 people or more, no one seems to know exactly what it signifies.

Another such traditional event that is more a celebration than a contest is held every year in the middle of January.   This is a tribute to Saint Antoni, the farm and working animals patron saint. This is a fiesta that isn’t contained to just one city but happens in many towns across the islands.  There are huge campfires surrounded by dancers in costumes and devilish make-up, dancing into the night accompanied by and drummers.  These celebrations start in the early morning and continue on all day into the late evenings.  A breakfast of chocolate starts off the day of culinary delights so inherent to every festival in Spain.  There are performances throughout the festival all honoring the life of the saint.  As the festival progresses it is sometimes compared with the Mardi Gras festival in the United States, and many people are disguised and drinking quite a bit of muscatel, the night can tend to become a bit of an erotic affair.

The cuisine of the city of Barcelona, Spain ranges from neuvo-experimental dishes and spice combinations to the more traditional and simple time-tested flavors.  Tomatoes and garlic are key ingredients to any dish.  And the cooking would not be complete nor true without a generous helping of olive oil.  Added to the list of ingredients in this region, which differ from the other areas of Spain, are items such as nuts and raisins.  These are added most often to vegetables, chicken dishes or other poultry are often mixed with oranges, grapes, apples and other fruit.  And dishes such as escargot with rabbit are quite common.

The city of Barcelona is very close to the Mediterranean Sea, which provides the chef’s of this region a large variety of fresh seafood to choose from and utilize in the creation of some of the tasty dishes in the world.  This city is also very close to Valencia and France, and the trading of the use of and variety of spices and herbs from these regions has influenced the local flavor as well.  And while the flavors and tastes may be delicious and may seem complex, the ingredients are really rather simple.  Take something so simple as garlic bread.  This is often a favorite breakfast of the people of the area and is made by using a lavish amount of olive oil rubbed over crusted loaves of baguettes.  The baguettes are then toasted with garlic and tomatoes and finished off with a bit of salt.  Garlic and tomatoes are also key ingredients in the local dish of roasted baby onions.  Red peppers, almonds and of course, generous amounts of olive oil are then added which creates a delicious vegetable dish that is cooked over fire, and remains tender and flavorful.  Various main dishes are prepared with various combinations of seafood and meat.  Paella is a signature Catalan dish and is a veritable melting pot creatures from the sea, shrimp, lobster, squid, mussels…they are all tossed together with spices, lemon, tomatoes and olive oil.  These dishes are sometimes served with rice and sometimes served over pasta.

And the most famous dessert, served in small restaurants to the dining rooms of the resorts and various 5 star Barcelona hotels, is called Crema Catalana.  Here it is easy to see the French influence as it is basically, Creme Brulee.  It is made up from a tasty vanilla creme pudding and finished with raw sugar caramelized by a small blow torch.  The effect is the sugary, and hardened topcoat that when cracked delicately with a spoon gives way to the delightful simplicity of vanilla.  A perfect finish to any Catalana meal.

In any economy, there are winners and losers. In this economy—for the time being at least—business travelers seem to have drawn the short straw.

The New York Times recently reported that business conference attendance could plummet 12 percent this year, and off-site meetings and corporate events fall 9 percent. Add to that PKF Hospitality Research’s report that 40 of the top 50 hotel markets it tracks will see a drop in occupied rooms this year, and it’s clear that business travel is tanking.

But there’s a silver lining of sorts to all these otherwise dismal numbers. Business travel loses mean leisure travel gains. With empty hotel spaces, there are significant hotel savings out there for leisure travelers.

“Leisure travelers who want the most bang for their buck on vacation this year should look to the big cities that traditionally do a lot of business in conventions and corporate events,” says Brian Ek, Priceline.com’s in-house travel expert.
