The Gibson House in Boston

Practically every school child in America knows about the historic events of the Boston Tea Party . Many more remember the tales of the midnight ride of Paul Revere. Students of literature certainly are familiar with Edgar Allan Poe’s connection with the city of Boston. Far fewer are familiar with the Gibson House. This national historic landmark was constructed sometime between 1859 and 1860. For travelers with an interest in the first century of American architecture, it’s a prime destination.

The historic Gibson House is a single-family residence and museum, complete with kitchen, butler’s pantry, scullery, and water closets. The home contains formal rooms and private family quarters, and visitors will be able to see the Gibsons’ original furniture and personal possessions, offering them a look at life of a Boston family and their domestic staff in the 19th Century. Owned by a widow named Catherine Hammond Gibson, she moved to the then-developing flats of Back Bay with her son, Charles Hammond Gibson. She became one of the few women to own a house in the “New Land.”

Today, travelers, while staying in top Boston hotels , may catch a glimpse of this life because of Charles Gibson, Jr., who was the middle child of Charles Hammond Gibson. Known as a poet and travel writer, and horticulturalist, he was known as an eccentric, often appearing in formal attire, such as a morning coat, spats, and a cane. He wanted to preserve a part of his childhood and so established the museum publicly in 1957, although guests were often welcomed to sit on the stairs and sip tea or martinis to see the furniture which was separated from use by a gold cord in 1936.

There are also many areas long the way the offer up some nice places to sit or relax. Lots of animals and gardens through out the park. A Dog’s Life in Miami

These are the kinds of interesting people that make up a world, and help keep it spinning on its axis. There are some who lose touch with the world of the everyday, in terms of having a healthy relationship with reality. Then there are those who seem to have made a certain decision somewhere along the way to reject the evidence and dive into a delusion. But there are also those who just happen to love dogs more than anything else in the world.

It’s hard to know for sure what’s true, or harder still to judge, but no one can argue that Conchita , the chihuahua who was named the main beneficiary in Gail Posner’s will, is not one lucky dog. Miami is not chock full of eccentrics, where the vast majority of people here live in their own versions of the real, and their versions seem to be fairly inclusive. It makes for a pretty lively atmosphere, with great possibilities for dancing all night, enjoying the beach, and the five star hotels in Miami .

But those who do not fit into any of the million possible molds are spectacularly fascinating. It’s very curious to see someone who’s decided that their millions of dollars in estate money shouldn’t go to family. Instead, the dog, and those who helped her take care of the dog, are the ones who get to live well for the rest of their lives. While living well is said to be the best revenge, it can also be a precarious one, as the son is contesting everything.

Brett Carr is maintaining that he is deserving of a much larger piece of her estate, and that there are some very obvious problems worth looking into here. It is very hard to argue that anyone who leaves it all to the dog is not a little bit troubled. At the same time, it does show that Miami is always interesting, and it takes all kinds.

Karankawa in South Padre

It’s stunning just to consider a town where 24 of its 36 miles are one long, glorious beach. It’s also stunning to consider that this, South Padre Island, is still a bit of a hidden treasure in the tourism industry, but the word is starting to get out. People are finding out why this was a favorite fishing spot of President Harding, along with all the other glorious luxuries it has to offer the locals. It’s also right across the border, making it a wonderful beginning for an international journey, and also a great place to come back to, enjoying the beach one more time before heading home.

It has all the makings of a wonderful paradise, with a ready supply of fresh seafood, and gorgeous and luxurious hotels. South padre has a lot to recommend it for the present, and it was also a very hospitable spot in the past as well. The Karankawa , a tribe that has been much maligned, had spent a considerable amount of time here, as evidence of their dwellings and other artifacts demonstrate. When Cabeza de Vaca passed through here in the 16th century, he was struck by their very compassionate demeanors, and remarked that he’d never met a culture before who were so kind to their children.

Some elements of his story are recounted in a rather brilliant and altogether disturbing film, Cabeza de Vaca , although information about the bands that lived here is very scarce. It is becoming more widely acknowledged that the theories about their practice of cannibalism are vastly misunderstood. It was a practice of most of the peoples in the area at the time, and didn’t set the Karankawa apart as a particularly brutal people. The evidence that is there, in fact, supports quite the opposite. By 1858, it is believed, they were wiped out completely, leaving behind only stories of a very complex culture who adapted very successfully to scores of difficulties, all the way to the end.

Austin is full of great cultural attractions and of course its music scene is, as they describe it, the best in the world. Meanwhile, the opportunities for outdoor activities and recreational pursuits is also one of the great things about the city and the surrounding area and the lakes, great hikes and beautiful parks entice many of the guests staying in Austin. Hold Steady with Alternative Music in Brooklyn

New York is supposed to have a reputation lately for recent turns to vapid interests among the locals, and a general lack of depth in thought. Who knows why, perhaps it’s because it was held so high for all things intellectual and complex for so long. However, it can’t last long, and it won’t last long, because this is New York, and the people who live here are always testing each other.

It keeps things fresh, and it keeps minds sharp, and sometimes it makes for excellent art. These are some of the reasons why hotels like these continue to attract visitors wanting to see if the energy is still strong here. For those of us who are paying attention, it obviously is. And there are lots of splendid local things to see, and work to enjoy. One of the best things about the city is that you can sit in a small club, and hear a band play live music, and the sound is so good you wonder why they’re not famous. But then you discover that they are famous, and just want to play some small gigs for their fans here.

This is how groups like the Hold Steady seem to operate, and it’s great news for their peers at home. Based in Brooklyn, the Hold Steady are quietly picking up steam, and their music is making its way through the world.

This is good news for the world as well as for the band, because this is pretty smart and catchy stuff. With the members quoting Kerouac and talking about Beat culture in depth, we return to another New York again, where the anti-intellectual seems to be taking a back seat in favor of reason, and we get to enjoy moments of articulate bliss. The style is by turns sloppy and well-coordinated, but always slick and intentional. High energy rules their shows, and there’s no sense here that this is a boy band.

Looking more like your friends at a barbecue than supermodels turned into pop stars, there is a camaraderie here that commands an open ear, and a sharp mind.
