Vinyl shutters do a pretty good job of simulating the wood look of traditional shutters and the cost is less than other exterior window materials. Vinyl shutters are a great alternative for a home owner strapped for cash, but who would like to add curb appeal and value to their home.

Vinyl has come a long way from its earlier introduction and with the advent of new composite materials, exterior vinyl shutters last much longer than in previous years. They are much more durable and capable of withstanding harsh weather, where wooden shutters eventually will get damaged and begin to crack and peel or the paint will fade.

The maintenance alone is worth purchasing vinyl shutters. They are easier to clean and maintain than wooden shutters; with vinyl all a home owner needs is a moist rag to wipe the shutters clean. Plus, home owners won’t have to seal and paint the shutters like they would if they bought wood shutters.

Vinyl shutters can withstand moisture and humidity and maintain their shape, making them perfect in areas next to pools, hot tubs or beaches. Wooden shutters will swell and warp in any moist atmosphere and will need to be replaced more often than vinyl shutters.

About the only disadvantages to purchasing vinyl shutters is a home owner won’t be able to treat them like wood shutters; the vinyl designs won’t allow staining, which means they won’t be able to match the color of any outdoor furniture or trim and the vinyl shutters are not functional.
