Smaller art venues are the hidden treasures of Barcelona. When you find one, you almost want to keep it a secret because you feel it’s your own personal pleasure. Many can be found not far from Top Barcelona Hotels or nestled in the nearby suburbs. Most people, when in Barcelona visit the Picasso Museum or the Museum of Contemporary Art and miss out on the local artistic talent. Miss out on a chance to actually meet and talk with the artist. Even visiting the local coffee shops in and around Barcelona can be considered an art venue in that they display original art from local talent.
Of course, one must visit the major museums, after all, isn’t that what Barcelona’s all about? But, at least put aside one day to search for those smaller venues. Ask the people sitting in the coffee shops if they know of an off-the-beat art gallery or venue. Ask the wait staff at the local restaurants if they have a favorite art place to take their dates. Or just explore on your own. No guided tour; be as creative as an artist, and who knows, maybe you’ll discover a piece of art that inspires you soul and touches you deeply.
When you do find an art venue which you adore purchase a piece. Even though, as I mentioned earlier, you want to keep it your special discovery, blog about it! We need to support all local art, support all local artists. This will help keep art new and fresh. Always moving, always exploring and always keeping the peace. Just like music transcends conflict, art does too. With the economy in the slump, we still need to patron and support art. Art is usually the first thing to be cut in the budgets of schools and in government grants. Barcelona’s government does a wonderful job in supporting it’s artist community, but we need to step up and do the same.
